Botswana is as dramatic as it is beautiful with its Salt pans, deserts and fertile flood plains teeming with game. Add the fact that it remains possibly the most stable country in Africa, and it’s no surprise this is one of the continent’s top safari destinations.
Over 40% of the land is dedicated to national parks and reserves, where tourists can enjoy the wonders of the animal kingdom. With so much going for it, you might be concerned that the parks may resemble a shopping mall in sale season, but the country’s preference for low-impact luxury tourism ensures that even the most well-known viewing areas seldom get over-crowded.
The Okavango Delta is the land’s shining light. The largest inland delta in the world, its lagoons, lakes, swamps and waterways are crammed with exotic birds, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe and hippo. Look carefully and you may even catch a glimpse of a lion or two or a crocodile’s eyes peaking at you from the water.
Moremi Wildlife Reserve is situated in the centre of the delta and covers an area of 1,170 sq miles (3,000 sq kilometers). A wide range of habitats – wetland, floodplain, reed beds and forest and savannah woodland are present here. Prepare to feast your eyes.
Catch a boat to a lagoon to enjoy game viewing at its best. At the end of the day you could retire to any one of several campsites or lodges within the reserve, each with its own selling points, viewing possibilities and activities.
While you’re in the delta, you couldn’t say you’ve ‘done Botswana’ without enjoying a trip on a mokoro – a traditional Okavango Delta canoe, expertly poled by a local guide who stands in the stern ala Venice-style. The mokoro experience is one you’ll be talking about for a long time after you return home.
If the delta isn’t for you, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a refuge for animals and the country’s few remaining Bushmen, and it’s well worth the visit.
